Periodontitis treatment: protecting your gums and the tooth-supporting tissue

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the tissue that holds the teeth. Left untreated, it can lead to loose teeth and tooth loss. In most cases the inflammation can be stopped with targeted treatment and good follow-up care.

Periodontitis treatment: kurz erklärt

In periodontitis, bacteria from dental plaque get below the gum line. Gum pockets form in which the inflammation slowly breaks down the bone that holds the teeth. Because this is often painless for a long time, periodontitis is frequently noticed late. Studies also show links with general conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

During treatment the root surfaces and gum pockets are thoroughly freed of plaque and deposits. We work with ultrasonic instruments (piezo technique) and, where needed, use a laser that supports the treatment of the inflamed tissue.

Wann ist die Behandlung sinnvoll?

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or spontaneously
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Receding gums and sensitive tooth necks
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Loose or shifting teeth

So läuft die Behandlung ab

  1. Assessment

We measure the depth of the gum pockets, assess the bone on an X-ray and discuss the findings with you.

  2. Preparation

Professional cleaning and your oral hygiene at home lay the foundation for the actual therapy.

  3. Deep cleaning

Under local anaesthesia we clean the gum pockets and root surfaces with ultrasound and, where needed, laser support.

  4. Follow-up care

At regular check-ups we monitor healing and clean the pockets again so that the inflammation does not return.

Vorteile

  • The inflammation can be stopped in most cases
  • Your own teeth are protected
  • Gentle instruments: ultrasound instead of rotating drills
  • Healthier gums and fresher breath

Risiken und Grenzen

After deep cleaning the gums can be sensitive for a few days. As the inflammation subsides, the gums often recede slightly; the tooth necks may then look longer and be sensitive. Bone that has already been lost does not usually grow back by itself. Without regular follow-up care periodontitis can flare up again; smoking and poorly controlled diabetes make healing more difficult.

Nachsorge

Consistent care at home is decisive, especially between the teeth. Keep the appointments of the supportive periodontal therapy; we decide how often they are needed based on your findings.

Häufige Fragen

Can periodontitis be cured?

In most cases periodontitis can be stopped. Bone that has already been lost, however, does not usually grow back by itself. That is why regular check-ups and good oral hygiene after treatment are so important.

Is periodontitis contagious?

The bacteria can be transmitted, for example through saliva. Whether someone develops the disease depends mainly on oral hygiene, the immune system and risk factors such as smoking.
