Dental emergency explained

A dental emergency is anything that should not wait until the next regular appointment: severe or throbbing pain, swelling of the face or gums, a broken or knocked-out tooth, bleeding after a procedure, or a lost crown that causes discomfort.

Emergency treatment first relieves the pain and finds the cause. We then plan the definitive treatment with you calmly.

When is the treatment appropriate?

  • Severe, throbbing or persistent toothache
  • Swelling of the gums, cheek or jaw
  • A broken, loose or knocked-out tooth after an accident
  • Bleeding or severe pain after a procedure
  • A lost filling or crown that causes discomfort

How the treatment works

  1. Call us

Call us, even at night or at the weekend. We discuss your symptoms and tell you what happens next.

  2. Examination

At the practice we find the cause, with a digital X-ray if needed.

  3. Pain relief

We relieve the acute symptoms, for example by opening an inflamed tooth, placing a temporary restoration or treating a wound.

  4. Next steps

If further treatment is needed, we discuss the options and plan the next appointment with you.

Risks and limitations

Emergency treatment mainly relieves acute symptoms. Further treatment is often needed afterwards, such as a root canal treatment or a new filling. Painkillers can mask symptoms temporarily but do not remove the cause.

Call the emergency number 144 if swelling comes with a high fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, after an accident with loss of consciousness, or for heavy bleeding that does not stop.

Aftercare

Follow the advice you receive after treatment and keep your follow-up appointments. Take painkillers only as directed on the package leaflet or after speaking to us. Contact us if the symptoms get worse or new ones appear.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if a tooth has been knocked out?

Hold the tooth by the crown only, not by the root, and do not clean or dry it. Keep it in a tooth rescue box from the pharmacy or, if you do not have one, in cold milk. Call us immediately: the sooner the tooth is treated, the better the chance of saving it.

Can I also call at the weekend?

Yes. Our practice phone is answered around the clock, including weekends and public holidays.

What helps with the pain until the appointment?

Cool any swelling from the outside; do not apply heat. Over-the-counter painkillers can help temporarily; follow the package leaflet and ask us if you are unsure. It is important that the cause is assessed by a dentist.
