Dental hygiene & prevention explained

Even with careful brushing, interdental brushes and floss at home, not every area is reached. Bacterial plaque and tartar can remain there and encourage decay and periodontitis.

During professional cleaning our prevention team removes hard and soft deposits and stains, including between the teeth and along the gum line. The teeth are then polished. To check for decay, we take digital bitewing X-rays every two years, which are analysed by our dentists and additionally by AI software.

When is the treatment appropriate?

  • Regular prevention for adults and children
  • Tartar, plaque or stains, for example from coffee, tea or smoking
  • Bleeding gums when brushing
  • Follow-up care after periodontitis treatment
  • Implants, crowns or bridges that need special care

How the treatment works

  1. Assessment

We check your teeth and gums and discuss which areas need particular attention.

  2. Cleaning

Hard and soft deposits are removed, including between the teeth and along the gum line.

  3. Polishing

The tooth surfaces are smoothed and polished so that new deposits stick less easily.

  4. Advice

We show you which aids suit your teeth and arrange your next appointment.

Benefits

  • Decay and periodontitis are detected early
  • Clean, smooth teeth and a fresh feeling
  • Personal tips for care at home
  • A reminder of your next appointment through our recall service

Risks and limitations

If the gums are inflamed, cleaning can be uncomfortable and they may bleed slightly. Afterwards the teeth can be temporarily sensitive to cold. Professional cleaning does not replace daily care at home.

Aftercare

Brush thoroughly twice a day and clean between your teeth. How often professional prevention makes sense depends on your personal risk; we recommend it every six months for many patients. Our recall service reminds you of your next appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have dental hygiene?

We recommend professional prevention every six months for many patients, in addition to their own oral hygiene. Depending on your personal risk, other intervals may be appropriate.

Does health insurance cover dental hygiene?

Basic compulsory health insurance does not usually cover dental hygiene. Many supplementary dental insurance policies contribute to the costs; the conditions depend on your policy.

Is prevention also useful for children?

Yes. Preventive measures are important not only for adults but also for children. We show children and parents how to look after their teeth properly.
