Dental treatment under general anaesthesia – safely supervised in our practice

For larger procedures or severe anxiety, treatment under general anaesthesia may be medically indicated. The anaesthesia is administered by a specialist anaesthesiologist directly in our practice. For many smaller treatments we also offer computer-controlled, particularly gentle local anaesthesia.

Treatment under general anaesthesia explained

Under outpatient general anaesthesia you sleep throughout the treatment. It is administered by a specialist anaesthesiologist who comes to our practice for this purpose and monitors you until you wake up. After a short recovery phase you can go home accompanied.

In most cases local anaesthesia is sufficient. For children and, on request, adults, we use the computer-controlled STA anaesthesia system (The Wand): a very fine needle and a small, evenly dosed amount of anaesthetic make the injection noticeably more comfortable for many patients.

Which form of pain control is right for you is decided in a detailed conversation with you and the anaesthesiologist.

When is the treatment appropriate?

  • Larger surgical procedures or extensive restorations
  • Pronounced anxiety about dental treatment
  • Situations in which treatment while awake is not possible

How the treatment works

  1. Preliminary consultation

We discuss the planned treatment, your health and your medicines. The anaesthesiologist clarifies with you whether anaesthesia is suitable.

  2. Preparation

You receive precise instructions, for example how long you must fast before the procedure, and arrange for someone to accompany you.

  3. Treatment

While you sleep, we carry out the planned treatment; the anaesthesiologist monitors you the whole time.

  4. Waking up and going home

After the recovery phase you can go home accompanied. You must not drive yourself on the day of the anaesthesia.

Benefits

  • Administered by a specialist anaesthesiologist
  • Treatment in the familiar practice
  • You are not consciously aware of the treatment
  • Included for treatment costs from CHF 5,000, if medically indicated

Risks and limitations

General anaesthesia is very safe today, but not without risk. Temporary nausea, tiredness, sore throat or hoarseness are common. Serious complications such as cardiovascular or breathing problems or allergic reactions are very rare. Your personal risk depends on your state of health; the anaesthesiologist discusses it with you before the procedure. That is why we only use general anaesthesia when it is medically indicated.

Aftercare

Have someone collect you after treatment and spend the rest of the day resting. On the day of anaesthesia you should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions. Follow the anaesthesiologist's instructions on eating, drinking and medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides whether general anaesthesia is possible?

Whether general anaesthesia is medically indicated is decided together with you and the specialist anaesthesiologist in a detailed consultation.

How much does general anaesthesia cost?

For a procedure from CHF 5,000, general anaesthesia is included in the price, if medically indicated. For smaller treatments we discuss the costs with you in advance.

I am very anxious. Does it have to be anaesthesia?

Not necessarily. Often a calm conversation, time and gentle anaesthesia with the computer-controlled system already help. Anxious patients are very welcome here; together we find the right way.
